    Biography

    Paul Lopez is a member of the firm's Construction Group, where he represents a range of clients, including public and private owners, general contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, design professionals, and sureties. Prior to joining Robinson+Cole, Paul worked as in-house counsel for a large specialty subcontractor based in New York City, where he gained experience in all aspects of construction, from procurement through project completion. This background allows him to effectively communicate with and represent clients as outside counsel.

    Contract Procurement and Project Delivery

    Paul represents owners, developers, and construction firms in the review and negotiation of construction agreements. He has drafted construction-related contracts and documents, including prime contracts, subcontracts, joint venture agreements, master service agreements, and requests for proposals. 

    Dispute Resolution

    Paul handles all types of claims which can arise during construction projects, including bid protests, change order requests, payment disputes, delay claims, and allegations of defective design or construction. He assists with resolving disputes through alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration, and also litigates claims in state and federal court when necessary.

    Employment Counseling

    Paul is an experienced employment attorney, and has advised employers on a wide range of issues, including terminations, wage & hour rules, benefits, discrimination, harassment, drug testing, and family & medical leave. He has also reviewed and drafted employment contracts, severance agreements, employee handbooks, and various personnel policies for clients.

      • Represented a contractor in a complex dispute with a design professional after a newly constructed building failed to achieve LEED certification.*

      • Represented a manufacturer in a dispute with a public agency after the agency claimed that the manufacturer's goods did not comply with the Buy America Act.*

      • Negotiated a favorable settlement on behalf of a subcontractor involved in a six-figure payment dispute with a contractor arising from a project for which the private owner had lost funding.*

      • Drafted various form contracts for a company that provides testing, inspection, and certification services across North America.*

      • Represented a private property owner in a payment dispute with a general contractor arising out of allegations that the contractor had artificially inflated the value of change orders.*

      • Drafted a comprehensive drug and alcohol testing policy for a material supplier with employees who are subject to the Department of Transportation's rules and regulations.*

      • Defended several companies against claims of discrimination based on age, race, and disability in front of various government agencies, including the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD).*
