Connecticut Law Tribune Honors Seven Robinson+Cole Lawyers During Connecticut Legal Awards

The Connecticut Law Tribune recognized Robinson+Cole lawyers Stephen E. Goldman, Lina M. Morkan, John B. Lynch, Jr., Gregory J. Bennici, Conor O. Duffy, Emilee Mooney Scott, and Jennifer L. Shanley during the publication’s annual Connecticut Legal Awards on May 12, 2021. Hosted virtually, the awards honor those attorneys and judges who have made a remarkable difference in the legal profession in Connecticut - whether in shaping the law, achieving outsized results for their clients, being an outstanding jurist or assisting those in need of legal services.

Steve was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes a lawyer “who has left a lasting imprint on the legal community of Connecticut.” Linda received the Distinguished Leader Award for achieving “impressive results in 2020 and demonstrating clear leadership skills that helped achieve those results.” John was honored as a finalist for the Diversity Initiative Award. A new recognition to the awards slate, the distinction honors a lawyer or firm who has made a significant contribution to diversity and inclusion efforts in Connecticut’s legal community. Greg, Conor, Emilee and Jen were all recognized as “New Leaders in the Law,” a distinction that spotlights lawyers under the age of 40 who have excelled in the courtroom, in client service and cultivation, in service to bar associations, and in performing pro bono work or community service in a volunteer capacity. Greg Bennici and Pat Begos Co-Author Chapter in 2019 DRI Rescission Compendium

Managed Care and Employee Benefit Litigation lawyers Greg Bennici and Pat Begos co-authored the Connecticut chapter in the recently published 2019 Defense Research Institute’s (DRI) Rescission Compendium. The Compendium, which surveys the law on insurance policy rescission in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 10 provinces in Canada, is a comprehensive resource for insurance carriers, claim professionals, defense and coverage counsel, and the judiciary.  Offering both an historical and current perspective on the law of rescission in Connecticut, the chapter Pat and Greg authored provides a roadmap for how to successfully analyze rescission challenges under Connecticut law. Greg Bennici Addresses Law Day Luncheon on “Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom”

Business Litigation Group lawyer Gregory J. Bennici offered introductory remarks at the Law Day luncheon of the Fairfield County Bar Association (FCBA), prior to the keynote speaker, Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen. The event was held on May 2, 2018 in Darien, Connecticut, and hosted more than 100 attendees. Mr. Bennici served as an FCBA Co-Chair of the 2018 Law Day, a nation-wide event sponsored by the American Bar Association. He addressed this year’s theme, “Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom,” speaking specifically to the separation of powers outlined in James Madison’s Federalist No. 51 and the increasing pressure placed on Madison’s constitutional order in recent decades. Reflecting on Madison’s precept that, “In republican government, the legislative authority necessarily predominates,” Mr. Bennici discussed the fragility of that principle in modern practice, and the burden that increasingly defaults to the judiciary as a result.

Patrick Begos and Greg Bennici Co-author Article Published in For the Defense

Business Litigation Group lawyers Patrick W. Begos and Gregory J. Bennici co-wrote the article "The Probate Exception to Federal Jurisdiction," published in the August 2017 issue of For the Defense, the member magazine for DRI - The Voice of the Defense Bar. The article focuses on how understanding the "probate exception," it's history, and the split among the circuits about whether it applies in cases for which federal question jurisdiction exists can aid in explaining to a judge why it should not apply to ERISA claims. Mr. Begos and Mr. Bennici also discuss the important distinguishing factors to be cognizant of when contemplating what effect the probate exception might have on any particular claim. Robinson+Cole Receives the Diana Kleefeld Pro Bono Award from Connecticut Appleseed

Robinson+Cole was presented with the Diana Kleefeld Pro Bono Award by Connecticut Appleseed for its work on a special education research project, and other pro bono efforts, during the organization’s “Good Apple” Awards in Hartford, Connecticut on November 11, 2019. Robinson+Cole lawyer Christine E. Bromberg served as co-chair of the annual event.

A group of R+C lawyers, including Gregory J. Bennici, Emily C. Deans, Peter K. Knight, Rachel V. Kushel, and paralegal Albina Yaikbaeva, recently assisted Connecticut Appleseed in a research project that examined how school districts are dealing with rising special education costs. R+C lawyer Ryan V. Leichsenring was also included in the firm’s pro bono recognition for his role in the spin-off of an existing Connecticut Appleseed program, Connecting through Literacy: Incarcerated parents, their Children, and Caregivers (CLICC), to a new public charity.
